I thought the NDP this year was pretty engaging and yes, better than last year. Its smaller in scale (less than half of the audiences allowed in good old National Stadium) and more lightings and new programs thrown in. Less typical, I must say.
However, what particularly got me, was the two national day songs written by Jimmy Ye. I'm not a fan of his, but I thought the two songs engages the listener, and yes, wrangles the hearts of those who have strong attachments to Singapore. It sends out the challenge to the new generation (the Gen Xs, Ys and Zs) - what will they do to make Singapore a better place? And then thugs the heart strings of those with attachments to this island country - and belting out their feelings when they are so far away from home. Well, at least, I felt the same way when I was living overseas for just about two months.
